T-Bird Time Travelers

Turn Back Clock

As we wandered through the Union and Confederate camps, it seemed we had been transported back in time to a Civil War encampment. All around us were white canvas tents and fire pits with grates and tin coffee pots. Uniformed soldiers rested here and chatted there, waiting near their rifles for the next skirmish. Women sat in their long cotton dresses and hoop skirts, braiding one another’s hair or sewing. The scene contrasted sharply with the noise of the fight that would soon erupt when Union and Confederate soldiers met on the grassy slopes of the battlefield.  But in truth we were in Port Gamble for the annual Civil War reenactment, the Puget Sound Early Birds June event.

Tom and Susan Harris organized our day -- we met at noon-ish in Port Gamble and displayed our Little Birds. Among the time travelers were Harrises, Thornes, Callards, Niemis, Phil McCurdy and a “Cord” friend, Patrick Hart, and guests Les and Jo White .

Meeting Information -- Time and Place

Who's coming? Eight PSEB couples have signed up to promenade their lovely Little Birds in the car parade. Others say they'd like to go, but not parade. PSEB will have the single largest group of cars in the parade!_

Ferry information: For those coming from the west side of Puget Sound, take the 10 a.m. Southworth Ferry to Vashon. This is the biggest festival on the island, and the festival coordinator warns us to be at the ferry dock at least 30 minutes prior to the 10 a.m. departure.

T-Bird caravan from the ferry: Stan Liebenberg and Gordon Thorne have laid out a scenic route on side roads from the top of the hill after the ferry landing into the town of Vashon. We won't be able to wait for others to join us, so the scenic caravan will be only for who are on the 10 a.m. ferry.

What if I don't make the 10 a.m. ferry? Don't worry. All three ferries will be running, and there will be another one about 10:20 a.m. If you take a later ferry and are in the parade, drive directly to the staging site at Puget Sound Energy at 18125 Vashon Highway S.W., just south of the main intersection in town. It's on the right.

How do I get through any blocked-off streets and barricades? Show the car pass you received in your registration packet and that will get you.

Events

Each year, PSEB offers a variety of events designed to appeal to all members, their families, and their guests. Formal club activities include caravan drives, local day and overnight trips; dinner, brunch, and pot luck meetings; picnics with fun concours, and an annual Holiday Party.

Meetings include technical sessions -- sometimes, impromptu because of car breakdowns -- by PSEB members. The PSEB publishes a monthly newsletter to keep in touch with members and to provide information about events, reports on PSEB activities, technical articles, and other T'Bird related information.

The Club also provides support to local charities in the Puget Sound.
